Sometimes its quite clever to register your car not in your own country. Why? Here the reasons on the example of France / Germany:
If you are French you should register your car in Germany because:
1. Avoid the difficulties of the car-homologation which makes it almost impossible, to get your car registered, which you brought with you as relocation-goods from a non-EU foreign country.
2. No 8.000 Euro French CO2-tax to pay.
3. Exceed the TÜV (=Autovision)-control many months without trouble, as the French police is not familiar with the German number plates sticker.
4. No traffic fines up to 70 Euro according to EU law.
5. Even traffic fines over 70 Euro often don't get dispatched as according to EU regulations the homeland retains the fine, not the foreign country, where the violation occurred and which issues and dispatches the ticket.
6. French policemen usually don't speak German and that's why they don't stop you so often - to much headache and no much outcome to expect. And as you are not driving with an East-European number plate they don't asperse you so much to be a criminal...;-)
7. It's just cool to have a (2nd) car with German number plates.
If you are German you should register your car in France because:
1. No annual car tax ("KFZ-Steuer").
2. Car insurance is by average 50% cheaper then in Germany.
3. Profit from a more lazy TÜV-control in France. Get the Autovision (=TÜV) window sticker for two more years in France which you would not get in Germany for you tentative "problematic" car condition.
4. Exceed the TÜV(Autovision)-control many months without trouble, as the German police is not familiar with the French window sticker.
5. No traffic fines up to 70 Euro according to EU law.
6. Even traffic fines over 70 Euro often don't get dispatched as according to EU regulations the homeland retains the fine, not the foreign country, where the violation occurred and which issues and dispatches the ticket.
